We have a great reminder from Bernie this week to “Tend Your Heart!”
Who has been caught in the hustle of “back to school” time? Or just daily life for that matter? Me! Recently, I was sharing with a friend about how I feel like there just are not enough hours in the day to do much for myself. Guilt is usually the feeling that resonates from within when I begin to think about the things that I’d like to do, the places that I’d like to go, the rest that I’d like to get, the quite that I’d like to have, the prayer I’d like to live. After talking with my friend, and allowing her to give me a beat down, I took some time to reflect upon the fruit that came from our conversation.
I’d like to share two of those truth bombs with you:
First, I was reminded of a perspective of viewing my life as a garden. How I have a responsibility to take care of all that is entrusted to me. This applies to many things in our life. But the greatest responsibility that we have is our very own lives. If we seek to be refreshed, to be refueled in a way that will truly sustain us, to be filled up enough that we can pour out to others, we need to go beyond the superficial. Beyond the daily task, beyond the chocolate bar, shopping spree, or phone screen. I thought it was restful to just kick back and do some mindless perusing of social media! HA! It may not be a bad thing to do, but what we (what I) desperately need is to awaken my senses to the beauty that is me. I need to tend to my heart. I need to take time to pray, to open scripture, to just be quiet and listen to God, and maybe even polish my toes. God doesn’t want us to run ourselves ragged, only looking to the needs of others and never caring for ourselves. He wants us to live in a way that will deeply satisfy. In Proverbs 4:23 we read,
“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
I am a wellspring of life, you are a wellspring of life! Our heart is the core of who we are. It’s what makes us unique and distinct. We must treat ourselves!! We are not defined by our roles or accomplishments. We are much more than all of those, and we have a lot of roles!!
Secondly, and most important is the TRUTH that God absolutely adores YOU. We each have an important role to play in His kingdom. He has important works for us to do. He chose for us to each step out and fulfill our unique purpose, something special that only you can do. Jesus affirmed this truth when he said in John 15:16,
“You didn’t choose me. I chose you.”
God chose me!!He chose you too! Y’all, He knows us deeply, which means that He understands our failings, our inadequacies, and our daily mistakes, but He also sees our gifts and our potential. He knows what efforts combined with his supernatural grace are enough to move mountains and change the world. There is nothing that God wouldn’t do for you! So, together let us rest in Him. Let us tend our heart, the wellspring of life!
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
– Saint Augustine
