Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For now, the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
We celebrated one of my most favorite feast on January 1st, The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. This feast is the celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus and is the oldest feast of Mary celebrated by the Catholic Church. I am sure we all have our favorite saints and feast. As daughter, wife, and mother, Our Lady is one of my favs. She is real, she was chosen, called, and she sacrificed. She is like us ladies in lots of ways!! One of the things I like most about being like Mary is that like many of us, she is mother! She gets us. Mothers bring life, a gift from God into the world. It is beautiful, we can magnify our Lord with her, as mothers we can understand her love for Christ in a special way.
St. Ambrosre wrote, “Magnify the Lord with me. The Lord is magnified, not because the human voice can add anything to God but because he is magnified within us. Christ is the image of God, and if the soul does what is right and holy it magnifies that image of God, in whose likeness it was created and, in magnifying the image of God, the soul has a share in its greatness and is exalted.”
Christ has only one mother in the flesh. Like His mother, we too can magnify Him within us. Let us magnify our Lord with Mary, let us beg her for guidance and example in the new year. As woman, as daughter, as wife, and as mother, Mary is our best example of holiness! I am staying close to her this year, with hopes of magnifying our Lord with her!!
Let us pray: “Heavenly Father, You blessed the Virgin Mary with the fullness of grace. She is my model of faith, hope, and love. I give this new year to her intercession and ask for her holy prayers. Place my needs into the protection of her motherly love. With her help, I want my faith to grow. Give me an increase in the virtue of hope when troubles tempt me to despair. Guide me in understanding Your infinite love. And join my heart, dear Lord, to the Holy Mother’s Immaculate Heart, so that I may improve in loving everyone unconditionally, in imitation of my Savior, Jesus.” Amen
