In preparation for the “Bible Conference” (March 19th, Diocese of Alexandria, LA) I have decided to pick my favorite books of the bible and read them start to finish. My first go to was the Book of Sirach. It has provided simple, direct words of wisdom for me in many situations. One of my favorite verses to quote from Sirach says
“Speak concisely, say much in few words; be as one who knows and yet holds his tongue” (Chapter 32, verse 8)
Hello!!! That is a load of wisdom in a few words…. no pun intended. I believe the Holy Spirit whispers this verse to me periodically in an attempt to keep me out of trouble or as we say in the south from “stirring the pot.”
It is so important that we know scripture so that, when He wants to speak to us in those moments of reaction or, dare I say, moments of potential disaster, He can quickly bring to the forefront of our thoughts a verse that has been stored in the files of our intellect. What a marvel how our minds are designed such that we are able to retain and recall information for all purposes. Praise God, Our Marvelous Maker!!!
If you’d like to join me in my study of Sirach please email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) so we can share our thoughts and insights. I also found this handy printable version for anyone interested.
