Advent, celebrations of a beautiful Marian feast, and preparations for Christmas have lead me to reflect on how Mary responded to Elizabeth’s greeting with her uniquely perfect hymn. Her Magnificat, “My soul magnifies the greatness of the Lord.” Is it safe to presume that Mary, as the Mother of God had a pretty healthy self-esteem, but really…her soul magnifies God? Ever think of what to magnify really means? To better understand it myself I looked up a few synonyms for magnify: enlarge, boost, enhance, maximize, increase, augment, extend, expand, amplify, intensify. The definition of magnify is to make something appear larger than it is. So, how can a human magnify that which is greater?
Ever hear about Echo Canyon, Colorado? I recently heard a story about how awesome of a place this is. It is not only famous for it’s breathtaking picture perfect views. If you stand in the right spot and shout out your name, it will literally reverberate throughout the entire canyon, echoing over and over, and ascending louder and louder. Echo Canyon, because it is perfectly made to do so, receives a spoken word and perfectly magnifies it for the whole world to hear. It can’t even generate anything on it’s own, nor is it greater than the voice it receives. However, because of it’s perfect shape it magnifies your voice for the world to hear.
Mary magnifies the Lord. “My soul magnifies the greatness of the Lord. (Luke 1:46)” Like Echo Canyon, she perfectly receives God and echoes to the world what she hears. Remember her emptiness, it makes for a perfect echo.
Here’s some good news, we are like Echo Canyon too. Yep, all of us. We are made to magnify God, and echo His glory for the world to hear. Since it’s Advent, I find it appropriate to ponder the things that may keep our soul wounded, junked up, and out of tune. What are the things that keep us from echoing what God says? How’s your echo? Join me in cleaning out this Advent. Let’s make some room for Jesus. Let us give the perfect Christmas present, the echo that God puts inside of us. “He must increase, I must decrease. (John 3:30)”
Sweet Jesus, I ask for the grace today to taste your desire for my perfect echo. Please reveal to me anything that prevents my soul from magnifying your voice. Mother Mary, help me make room in my life, my family, and all of my relationships for your son. Teach me to magnify the Lord! Amen
