If you haven’t heard yet, the gals just got back from a little road trip to Philly!
There’s so much from the Benedicta Institute training and retreat weekend that we’ll unpack over the next few months, but during our time away I started thinking about you. What do you do when you need a retreat, but it just ain’t happening? Family, time, and money can take priority, but we all need a chance to spiritually recharge. With that thought, here are a few things we can do, read, watch, and sing at home to make our own mini-retreat.
Sometimes you just need some truth and wisdom to get you going through those rough days. Scroll through Sarah Swafford’s Truth Wall for quotes and inspiration to kick your life of virtue into high gear!
Order a cd (or a few dozen!) from Lighthouse Catholic Media, including Drawing Strength from Our Lady of Sorrows by Kimberly Hahn. A convert to the Catholic faith, honoring Mary was difficult for Kimberly to understand, but, in this presentation, she explains how she began to encounter Mary’s loving guidance in little ways on a daily basis.
Another Lighthouse title, in For Love and Marriage, Johnette Benkovic shares her conversion back to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church as well as the struggles that came when her husband didn’t share her faith. Listen in as Johnette explains how God blessed her in unexpected ways.
Download Hallie Lord’s free e-book! Freedom from Fear by Friday is a 5-day devotional that aims to help us break free from fear and anxiety. Don’t want to sign up for the mailing list? Just scroll through a few of her blog posts, or take a look at Hallie’s brand new release, On the Other Side of Fear.
Take a listen to some podcasts or even the Jennifer Fulwiler show on Sirius Radio. On the show, Jen talks pop culture and raising up families, and interviews great guests, including Kelly Pease Lombardi.
Sometimes we just need another woman to speak some truth – to us, in us, and over us. That’s exactly what Women Made New Ministries does. Though the materials are a little old, the substance of the site, from There Is No Shame in Being Healed video to the Women Made New cd to this list of resources just for women, makes the site well worth a visit.
We have spaces for cooking, cleaning, and diaper changing, but do we have a space for prayer? If not, make one! Choose a spot in your home or even outside and dedicate it to prayer. Bring your favorite chair, your favorite scent, your favorite prayer book. Having a dedicated space for prayer time makes “retreating” at home that much easier. (And while you’re at it, bring along some of your favorite worship songs.)
Even the most spiritually developed among us can often forget one thing – how to pray. We know we should but the actual act of praying can get away from us. That’s when something like Dynamic Catholic’s The Prayer Process cards can come in handy. These credit card sized cards outline the steps of prayer for us, so we can focus less on what’s going on around us, and more on just talking it through with God.
What else do you do to have your own mini-retreat at home? Comment below or send us a link to one of your favorite books, videos, or other resources so we can share it with everyone on Pinterest!
With grace and gumption,
